Tracking the Tropics: How do hurricanes get their names? TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — For 70 years, the National Hurricane Center has relied on a recycled list of names to identify tropical storms in the Atlantic basin. But how are those names chosen, and what happens if one is retired?The NHC maintains six lists of names that are used in rotation and recycled every six years. For example, the names used during the 2023 hurricane season will be used again in 2029.How are names chosen?The World Meteorological Organization is responsible for maintaining and updating the storm names used in the Atlantic Basin. The list of hurricane names covers only 21 letters of the alphabet excluding Q, U, X, Y, and Z, as it is difficult to find suitable names for these letters. In addition, the name must be instantly recognizable.For that reason, English, French, and Spanish names are used in balance to reflect the geographical coverage of Atlantic and Caribbean storms. 16-year-old drowns at Fawn's Leap, deputies investigate FAWN'S LEAP, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Greene County Sheriff's Office is investigating an apparent drowning that happened Tuesday around 3:21 p.m. at the base of the waterfalls at Fawn's Leap. Law enforcement says a group of friends was swimming at Fawn's Leap when the victim jumped off the ledge at the top of the falls with another friend. Both landed in the water near the south side of the base of the falls where the current caused by the waterfall was too strong for them to swim out of.Another swimmer saw them struggling and swam over to try and help. He was able to assist one swimmer but was unable to help the second. The second was later recovered by divers from the State Police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
