SAN FRANCISCO — Golden State has been teetering the playoffs and play-in line and knew how badly it needed to beat the New Orleans Pelicans, who entered Tuesday just a half-game behind the Warriors in the Western Conference standings. And while the focus wasn’t all there in the first half, the Warriors, propelled by Stephen Curry and Jordan Poole, overcame a 17-point halftime deficit to pick up a much-needed 120-109 win over the Pelicans. Stephen Curry scored 39 points, Jordan Poole added 21, and Golden State (40-37) regained control of the sixth seed, sitting a half-game ahead of the Minnesota Timberwolves with five games left in the regular season. Curry and Poole led the Warriors in their second-half comeback, scoring 22 and 15 points, respectively, over the final two frames. The Warriors seemed to have carried over their execution problems from the end of their disappointing loss Sunday to Minnesota into Tuesday’s game. They spoiled a strong opening minute with ...SF apartment garage break-in caught on video

WASHINGTON (AP) — In the federal budget standoff, the majority of U.S. adults are asking lawmakers to pull off the impossible: Cut the overall size of government, but also devote more money to the most popular and expensive programs.Six in 10 U.S. adults say the government spends too much money. But majorities also favor more funding for infrastructure, health care and Social Security — the kind of commitments that would make efforts to shrink the government unworkable and politically risky ahead of the 2024 elections. These findings from a new poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research show just how messy the financial tug-of-war between President Joe Biden and House Republicans could be. At stake is the full faith and credit of the federal government, which could default on its obligations unless there is a deal this summer to raise or suspend the limit on the government’s borrowing authority.Biden this month proposed a budget that would trim deficit...UAB tops Utah Valley, sets up Conference USA showdown in NIT

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed 738 bills into law, proposed amendments to another 78 and vetoed three, taking action on the legislation ahead of a bill-review deadline this week, his office said Tuesday. The Republican governor said in a statement that he was “was honored to sign key pieces of bipartisan legislation that bolster law enforcement, cut red tape, make Virginia more competitive, and build on my commitment to restore excellence in education.” But he added that the year’s legislative session, which wrapped up Feb. 25, left “many big items unfinished.”Unable to reach a compromise on a full slate of proposed adjustments to the two-year state spending plan, lawmakers opted to pass a “skinny” spending bill that addressed just a handful of allocations, allowing House and Senate negotiators to carry on with their broader discussions. A number of Youngkin’s top priorities, including additional tax cuts and a...In AP interview, Ukraine’s Zelenskyy says he’s ready to speak to Chinese President Xi after Putin meeting
