Eva Hartog, POLITICO Europe’s reporter in Moscow, has been expelled from Russia after 10 years reporting in the country.Russia’s foreign ministry told Hartog last Monday that her visa would not be extended and gave her six days to leave the country. Hartog was told the decision had been made by the “relevant authorities,” but was given no additional information about how the ruling was made.Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began last year, foreign journalists have been required to reapply for their visa and media accreditation every three months, as opposed to once a year before the war started. Hartog’s expulsion is the first known time a foreign journalist based in Russia has been kicked out by Russia since the Kremlin escalated hostilities in Ukraine, though Wall Street Journal correspondent Evan Gershkovich was locked up on espionage charges in March. Since President Vladimir Putin launched all-out war against Ukraine in February 2022, the Russian authori...Police tape off area amid investigation outside South Station

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia resumed its targeting of grain infrastructure in Ukraine’s southern Odesa region, local officials said Wednesday, using drones in overnight strikes on storage facilities and ports along the Danube River that Kyiv has increasingly used for grain transport to Europe after Moscow broke off a key wartime export deal through the Black Sea.At the same time, a loaded container ship stuck at the port of Odesa since Russia’s full-scale invasion more than 17 months ago set sail and was heading through the Black Sea to the Bosporus along a temporary corridor established by Ukraine for merchant shipping.Ukraine’s economy, crunched by the war, is heavily dependent on farming. Its agricultural exports, like those of Russia, are also crucial for world supplies of wheat, barley, sunflower oil and other food that developing nations rely on.After the Kremlin tore up a month ago an agreement brokered last summer by the U.N. and Turkey to ensure safe Ukraine grain exports th...Offshore drilling rig arrives in Lebanese waters ahead of work near Israel border

BEIRUT (AP) — An offshore drilling rig arrived at its location in the Mediterranean Sea off Lebanon’s coast and will start operations in the coming weeks to search for gas, Lebanese Cabinet ministers said Wednesday. The rig is expected to begin drilling in September in Lebanese waters near the border with Israel after the two countries reached a deal last year on their maritime border. Lebanon and Israel have formally been at war since Israel’s creation in 1948.Cash-strapped Lebanon hopes that future gas discoveries will help the small Mideast nation pull itself out of the worst economic and financial crisis in its modern history.Minister of Transport Ali Hamie wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that the rig arrived Wednesday morning at the location where it is scheduled to begin work. The rig faces the southern port city of Tyre.“We hope that Lebanon will become an oil state,” Lebanon’s Energy Minister Walid Fayyad told reporters in Beirut, adding that the results o...Melinda Henneberger: 98-year-old Kansas newswoman died in the line of duty after police raid

Joan Meyer, 98-year-old enemy of the people, died in the line of duty on Saturday.A newswoman since 1953 and co-owner of the local paper in her hometown in central Kansas, she lived to see her Marion County Record, as well as her home, raided by police on Friday, for reasons that defied both law and logic. It is not hyperbole to say that this attack on the people’s right to know appears to have killed her.On Friday, police showed up looking for evidence that a reporter had run an improper computer search to confirm an accurate report that a local business owner applying for a liquor license had lost her driver’s license over a DUI.According to coverage of this story on the Record’s website, the reporter “made no attempt to conceal her identity, providing her name.” What’s more, the Record had decided not to run the story, because editors questioned the motives of their tipster. The business owner’s complaint did have this result: People across...Vermonter accused of domestic assault, violating conditions of release

Dear Amy: My friend “Cynthia” and I have become much closer recently, as we have both gone through divorces and shared our experiences (I’m a guy).Cynthia recently moved back into the area after living a few states away, and we have been able to go out a few times.I am enjoying finally being on my own after a very mentally and emotionally draining divorce.I have been very open that I will not be sleeping around, and I have stated that I am interested in pursuing a long-term relationship with her, with the idea that we can begin exploring moving in together sometime next year.I have recently come across a TikTok page of Cynthia’s that (basically) is filled with videos airing out every small disagreement we’ve ever had, not to mention presenting me as a guy who “won’t commit” because I want to take my time working toward moving in together. These videos get thousands of views, and some of the comments (mostly very negative ones at my expense) include references ...Latest news
