By LAURA BARGFELD (Associated Press)TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Idalia became a hurricane on Tuesday, threatening to bring deadly storm surge and dangerous winds to Florida’s Gulf Coast after lashing Cuba with heavy rain.Florida residents loaded up on sandbags and evacuated from homes in low-lying areas along the Gulf Coast to prepare for a storm that the National Hurricane Center projected could have sustained winds of up to 120 mph (193 kph). That would make it a Category 3 hurricane — a potentially big blow to a state still dealing with lingering damage from last year’s Hurricane Ian.At 8 a.m. EDT Tuesday, Hurricane Idalia was about 320 miles (515 kilometers) south-southwest of Tampa, with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (130 kph), the hurricane center said. Idalia was moving north at 14 mph (22 kph). The center of Idalia is forecast to reach the Gulf Coast of Florida as “an extremely dangerous major hurricane before landfall on Wednesday,” and then mo...FBI and BCA warn of phone scam in Minnesota

Federal and state authorities are warning the public about fraudulent calls from people claiming to be from the FBI or Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The callers try to manipulate people into giving them private information such as Social Security numbers, banking information and home addresses.Scammers are using spoofing technology that makes caller ID match the official phone numbers of the FBI and the BCA, according to a new release Monday. By pretending they are conducting an official investigation, the callers ask for the private information. While real FBI and BCA agents may contact people during investigations, it’s important for people to verify whether the person is a legitimate agent by asking for a callback number and then calling the agency’s official general information line to verify.“A legitimate BCA agent will encourage you to call the main phone number and confirm their identity. If the person who called doesn’t want you to do that, hang up th...Babe Ruth induction day at the NYS Baseball Hall of Fame

Coloradans with old cars soon will be able to exchange them for money toward the purchase of an electric vehicle as part of a broader effort by state leaders to incentivize people to swap gas cars for electric models. The new Vehicle Exchange Colorado program allows low- and moderate-income residents of Colorado to exchange their old cars for up to $6,000 off an electric vehicle, providing another discount that can be combined with other state and federal EV tax credits. A decade ago, the prestigious PolitiFact Lie of the Year went to President Barack Obama’s assurance “If you like your health care plan, you can keep it” under the Affordable Care Act. This year, I was not able to keep the plans I liked, not once but twice. Bright Health, Humana, Oscar Health, and Friday Health Plans recently packed up and left the state, leaving about 218,800 of us scrabbling to obtain another health insurance plan on the state exchange. Two years after the General Assembly passed the Colorado Option, House Bill 1232, we have four fewer health insurance options. Coincidence? Hardly. Lawmakers thought they could defy a basic law of economics and get away with it. Government price fixing causes shortages. We don’t need to bust out a supply and demand curve graph or look at pictures of Soviet bread lines to understand the lesson. When the government demands more for less, we get less.Under the diminishing Options law, health insurers in small group and individual market...Here’s how Colorado-made products end up on prime time TV shows like “Jack Ryan”
