Dane Mizutani: We don’t need to fire Kevin O’Connell every time the Vikings lose There’s a world in which the Vikings lose every game the rest of the season. They will likely be underdogs both times they play the Detroit Lions, including at home on Christmas Eve, and the matchup with the Green Bay Packers on New Year’s Eve feels like nothing more than a coin flip. That doesn’t mean every result should be a case study on whether somebody deserves to lose his job.The following needs to be said because a large portion of the fan base has forgotten: Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell is darn good at what he does.He proved that last season by leading the Vikings to a 13-4 record in the name of situational mastery. Burt Riskedahl: A plea before dying — on behalf of those who might need it On Sept. 22, 2023, my father, Burt Riskedahl of Oakdale, was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and learned that he would likely live only a few more months.Throughout his lengthy career as a social worker, lawyer and trial court judge, my father had always been focused on the impact of laws on children and vulnerable family members, and cases involving protection of individual rights. Despite efforts by emergency personnel, she suffered substantial oxygen deprivation and received a diagnosis of “persistent vegetative state.” Without her family’s knowledge or consent, the hospital staff inserted a feeding tube in preparation for sending her to a nursing home. When it became obvious that there was no hope for recovery, the family decided to ha...

Study: Outlooks brightened but savings elusive during St. Paul’s guaranteed income project In 2020, St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter used federal, state and philanthropic dollars to launch one of the nation’s first municipal guaranteed income projects — $500 per month for 150 low-income families with newborn children. The funds, issued across 18 months on a pre-paid debit card, carried no spending restrictions, and results were tracked by academic researchers through voluntary, compensated surveys and interviews. The University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Guaranteed Income Research has completed a 59-page report on its findings, coming to the conclusion that St. Paul’s “People’s Prosperity Guaranteed Income Pilot” worked “protectively,” offering some financial breathing room during the worst of the pandemic, though that soon disappeared after the cash ended. One of the most elusive goals for participating families? Building up cash savings.18-month pilot studyIndividual financial situations improved during the 18-month pilot study but t...
