If not Shohei, then who? Ten non-Ohtani trade targets that could upgrade SF Giants’ roster

If not Shohei, then who? Ten non-Ohtani trade targets that could upgrade SF Giants’ roster Will they or won’t they? It’s the question that will dominate baseball for the next week leading up to next Tuesday’s 3 p.m. PT trade deadline. If the Angels are willing to trade Shohei Ohtani, the Giants should exhaust every organizational resource available to make that deal happen. He’s doing things the game has never seen before, instantly adds an ace and a middle-of-the-order bat to any contender and, with international television rights and advertising, is a cash cow.For those reasons, Ohtani likely isn’t going anywhere. The Angels’ postseason odds are slim (13.6% per FanGraphs), but they are still closer to playoff position this late into the season than any time since they signed Ohtani. That means the Giants will likely have to wait until this offseason, when 30 teams will commence in the free-agent pursuit of a lifetime, expected to end in the richest contract ever signed by an athlete in any of North America’s four major pro sports le...

UPS and Teamsters reach a labor deal, potentially avoiding a crippling strike By Vanessa Yurkevich | CNNUPS and the Teamsters have reached a tentative deal on a new contract. That could potentially avoid a strike, which could have started as soon as next week and crippled US supply chains.“UPS and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the union representing about 330,000 UPS employees in the U.S., have reached a tentative collective bargaining agreement,” the company said in a statement. The deal comes as the American labor movement has grown increasingly energized and empowered. The pandemic sent lower- and middle-class US workers’ pay surging for the first time in decades, but contract workers missed out on much of those gains. That’s why unionized actors, writers, nurses and teachers have recently gone on strike, and UPS workers and autoworkers have threatened walkouts.“Together we reached a win-win-win agreement on the issues that are important to Teamsters leadership, our employees and to UPS and our customers,” said Carol Tomé, UPS chief executive ...

Opinion: Religious bling offends me

Opinion: Religious bling offends me Editor’s note: This story is part of the annual Mosaic Journalism Workshop for Bay Area high school students, a two-week intensive course in journalism. Students in the program report and photograph stories under the guidance of professional journalists.Going to the mall, I would often see young adults pass by, wearing high-quality outfits with silver and sparkly crucifixes wrapped around their necks. I am not sure if they believed in God or not, but it interested me, as a believer, if they were flaunting their shiny pieces of jewelry for a reason. It made me question what made them want to wear such pieces. Is it a way to express their beliefs or is it a way to fit in with the crowd? The wearing of religious pieces of jewelry should not be normalized as a fashion statement. Individuals who do so without taking part in that faith are wrong.Today’s society already normalizes wearing crosses on their regular outfits, and some even go as far as tattooing a cross onto their body without ...
