Risks of a direct military confrontation between the two nuclear powers, Russia and the United States, are steadily growing, the TASS news agency quoted a senior Russian diplomat as saying on Tuesday (25 April).Vladimir Yermakov, the foreign ministry's head of nuclear non-proliferation, told the Russian state news agency that Washington is escalating the risks through its conduct with Moscow.Since the start of its invasion on Ukraine 14 months ago, Moscow has issued regular charges against the US and what it calls "the collective West" for raising the risks of a nuclear war, rhetoric intended to deter Kyiv's allies."If the United States continues to follow its current course of confrontation with Russia, with the stakes constantly escalating on the verge of sliding into direct armed conflict, then the fate of START (nuclear arms treaty) may be a foregone conclusion," Yermakov said. The US told Russia in March that it will cease exchanging some data on its nuclear forces following Mos...Miss Manners: I don’t want to hurt the bride, but I have qualms about the wedding

DEAR MISS MANNERS: I have a nephew who is getting married this coming June. His fiancee is a gem of a girl, but my nephew and I have almost no relationship.I am wondering if I should attend the wedding. He and his dad (my brother) are ardent right-wingers, while I describe myself as a “rabid liberal.” I know I will be ignored by the immediate family, and I’m not close to the extended family, either. My feeling is that I should just keep to myself and send them a nice gift. But at the same time, I don’t want to hurt my nephew’s bride. What say you?GENTLE READER: Unpleasant family duties are not a new invention, although Miss Manners recognizes that the level of unpleasantness is on the rise. You should not attend if you know that your presence will, through no fault of your own, cause a scene that will mar the event. Merely that you will be bored is a less convincing excuse. If you do not attend, nothing bars you from writing a charming letter to the bride,...Dear Abby: My hairstylist’s obsession has become really annoying

DEAR ABBY: I’ve been going to an excellent hairstylist for a year and a half. The problem is she doesn’t want me to have color on my hair. She wants me to let my hair go gray. I detest the idea. She keeps insisting it is “so pretty,” and she won’t let it go. During my last visit, she became almost combative about it. She said she had expected me to stop asking for color by now.She colors her hair a beautiful shade of red. When I asked her about it, she said that “she had the right because she was born with that color.”It is very hard to get a hairstylist who knows how to cut my hair. Why do you think this has become such an obsession with her, and what should I do?HATES THE GRAYDEAR HATES: What you should do is take control.Related ArticlesAdvice | Dear Abby: Am I overreacting to my European daughter-in-law’s behavior? KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — At least seven people were killed after a car on a moving passenger train caught fire overnight in southern Pakistan, officials said Thursday. Railways official Mohsin Sial said the train caught fire in Khairpur, a district about 500 kilometers (300 miles) north of Karachi, the capital of Sindh province. He said six people were killed in the blaze while a woman died when she jumped from the window of the moving train. The blaze also badly damaged several other cars in the train, she said, and the cause remained unclear. TV footage showed several burned sections of the train, which was on its way from Karachi to the eastern city of Lahore, when a car caught fire. Local media reported that the flames roared through the train Wednesday night, engulfing several cars. In Pakistan, poor passengers often bring their own small gas stoves on the trains to cook their meals, despite rules barring the practice. Safety regulations are often ignored in overcrowded trains.

“Él ...China pushes to digitize mines in attempt to make them safer

SHENMU, China (AP) — China is using “smart” technology to try to improve its safety record in coal mines, as part of a push by the National Energy Administration to bolster output and stem frequent accidents and collapses.Smart-mine sensors monitor aspects such as gas buildup and flooding or ventilation levels, and set off an alert if any reach a dangerous level. The sensors, located inside the mine and on carts and tools, transfer the data via 5G, allowing for real-time monitoring by a central command.Huawei Technologies Ltd., better known for telecommunications equipment, teamed up with state-owned Shaanxi Coal Industry Co to pilot its intelligent coal mine technology in Hongliulin and Xiaobaodang. Huawei has pivoted to other industries including self-driving cars, factories and mines amid U.S. sanctions that led it to report a 70% decline in profits from last year in March. The system has allowed Shaanxi to reduce the number of people working underground by 42% at the Xiaobaodang ...‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ author Jeff Kinney to unveil statue at his alma mater U.
